Overview

A beach day in Costa Rica’s surf town

Tamarindo is the best-known surf town on the Pacific coast of Guanacaste: a long, wide beach with a lively town right behind it. This private tour takes you there for a relaxed half day, and you decide how to spend it.

The star of Tamarindo is the surf. The waves here are reliable and gentle, which is why so many people stand up on a board for the first time on this beach. If you want to try, we set up a surf lesson for you with a local instructor: about two hours, starting on the sand and then in the water, with the board included.

If surfing is not for you, there is plenty to do. Walk the beach, swim in front of town, or sit under the trees with a cold drink and watch the surfers. The main street runs along the beach and is full of souvenir stalls, surf shops, small boutiques and cafes, so it is easy to shop for gifts and look around on foot.

For lunch you can choose between beachfront restaurants with your feet in the sand, fresh seafood, Costa Rican food or something international. Your guide knows the town and can point you to the right place for your group.

At the north end of the beach, a river estuary meets the ocean. It is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park, with mangroves, birds and crocodiles. It is a beautiful place to see from the sand. If you stay until late afternoon, Tamarindo also has one of the best sunsets on this coast.
