Overview

A blue waterfall hidden inside a canyon

La Leona is a waterfall you have to earn. It sits at the end of a narrow rock canyon on the Río Blanco, about 20 minutes from Liberia, and the only way to stand in front of it is to hike up the river and swim the last stretch between the canyon walls.

The Río Blanco is born on the slopes of the Rincón de la Vieja volcano. Its water is clear, not milky, and in the deep pools it turns a bright turquoise blue. The trail follows the river through tropical dry forest: you walk over rocks, cross the river, pass small caves and climb a few short ladders and ropes. It is an intermediate hike, and you will get wet from the start.

At the end, the canyon closes in. You leave your things on the rocks, put on your life jacket, get in the water and pull yourself along a rope into the slot canyon. Around the last corner, the waterfall drops into a deep blue pool with rock walls on every side. On the way there are two more small falls: one hidden between the canyon walls and another with a spot to jump into the blue water.

Along the river, your bilingual naturalist guide helps you look for wildlife. White-faced and howler monkeys are seen on most visits, along with iguanas, motmots and other forest birds. With luck, a spectacled owl is resting in the trees above the trail.

Locals say the name comes from a puma, a “leona”, that used to roam this river in the days of the cattle ranches. This is a private tour, so the pace is yours: we stop to swim, rest and take photos whenever you want.

Frequently asked

Is this tour private?

Yes. Only your group, with your own bilingual naturalist guide and private air-conditioned transport.

How hard is the hike?

Intermediate. You walk on rocks, cross the river, use a few ladders and ropes and swim at the end. You need good balance and to be reasonably fit. It is not a good choice for people with knee, heart or mobility problems.

Do I have to swim?

Yes. The last part to the waterfall is through the water, inside the canyon, holding on to a rope. Everyone wears a life jacket, which we provide. Tell us before you book if someone in your group does not swim.

Is safety equipment included?

Yes. Life jackets are included for everyone, and helmets are available if you would like to wear one.

Is it good for children?

We recommend it for active children from about 8 years old, with fit parents. For younger children, ask us first.

What shoes should I wear?

Sneakers or closed shoes that can get wet. The soles protect your feet on the rocks. Do not wear sandals or flip-flops.

What color is the water?

The Río Blanco is clear. In the deep pools it looks turquoise blue. It is not the milky blue of Río Celeste, which is a different river in a different area.

When is the best time to go?

December to April, in the dry season, when the river is lower and the water is at its clearest. In the green season the river is watched closely, and after heavy rain the canyon can be closed for safety.

What happens if the river is too high?

Safety comes first. If the canyon is not safe on the day of your tour, we move the date or offer you another tour.

Where is La Leona?

On the Río Blanco near the village of Curubandé, on private land about 20 minutes north of Liberia, on the way to Rincón de la Vieja.

What should I bring?

Sneakers that can get wet, a swimsuit, quick-dry clothes, a change of clothes, a towel, sport sunscreen, repellent, water and a dry bag or waterproof case for your phone.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes. Private, air-conditioned round-trip transport from your hotel is included.

Can we choose our own date?

Yes. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and we will confirm availability.

How do we pay?

We will walk you through the options when you book. It is quick and secure.

Is there a minimum group size?

Yes. All our tours are for a minimum of 2 people.

Do you offer group discounts?

Yes. For groups of more than 4 people, ask us about our group discounts when you book.

What is your cancellation policy?
