Things to Do in Liberia, Costa Rica: A Local Guide

What to see in the White City, and the volcano, waterfalls and rivers that make it the best base in Guanacaste.

Most visitors see Liberia for about ten minutes: they land at the airport, get in a car and drive to the beach. That is a pity, because the capital of Guanacaste is a relaxed small city and the best base for the volcano side of the province. Our team lives and works here, so this is the guide we give our own friends.

The White City

Liberia is known in Costa Rica as la Ciudad Blanca, the White City, for its whitewashed colonial houses and the white gravel that once covered its streets. The center is easy to walk. Start at the central park, where the modern Church of the Immaculate Conception faces the plaza, and look around the small shops and restaurants on the streets nearby.

Nearby, the Museo de Guanacaste shows work by local and national artists and is a good short stop if you want to understand the province beyond its beaches.

Cowboy country

Guanacaste is ranch land, and Liberia is the heart of its sabanero, or cowboy, culture. You see it in the cattle farms on the drive out of town, in the food and in the music. If you are here on July 25, the city celebrates the Annexation of Guanacaste to Costa Rica with folk dances, parades, cattle shows, local food and marimba music.

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano

The most important reason to stay near Liberia is the Rincón de la Vieja National Park, just northeast of the city. In the Las Pailas sector, a loop trail of about 2.5 miles takes you past steaming fumaroles and boiling mud pots, through dry forest with monkeys and birds. Our volcano tour adds a swim at the turquoise Oropéndola Waterfall and an afternoon in the Río Negro hot springs.

Plan around one detail: the national park closes on Mondays. If you prefer adventure to hiking, our Rincón de la Vieja Adventure Combo spends the day at Buena Vista, on the slopes of the same volcano, with zip lining, horseback riding, a waterslide, hanging bridges, volcanic mud and hot springs.

Two waterfalls close to town

La Leona. About 20 minutes from Liberia, the Río Blanco runs through a narrow rock canyon. You hike up the river, then put on a life jacket and swim the last stretch between the canyon walls to reach a waterfall that drops into a deep blue pool. It is an intermediate half day, best from December to April and recommended from age 8. See our La Leona Waterfall Adventure.

Llanos de Cortés. Southeast of Liberia, this wide curtain waterfall falls into a natural pool in the dry forest where you can swim. It is an easy stop with no long hike, and it is included in our Sloth Encounter and Safari Float tours.

Wildlife on the river

For crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas and waterbirds, the classic half day from Liberia is a boat ride on the Tempisque River along Palo Verde National Park. We wrote a full guide about it: where to see crocodiles in Guanacaste.

The beaches

Liberia sits inland, but the Pacific is close. Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa and the Papagayo Peninsula are the nearest beaches, and Tamarindo is a longer drive to the southwest. If you want time on the water, read our guides to snorkeling at Playa Huevos in Papagayo and learning to surf in Tamarindo.

Practical tips

  • Getting here. Liberia International Airport (LIR) is about 13 km (8 miles) west of the city. We meet arriving guests with private transfers and follow your flight.
  • The heat. Liberia is one of the hottest places in Costa Rica, especially in the dry season. Start outdoor activities early, wear a hat and carry water.
  • When to come. The dry season, roughly November to April, is sunny and the waterfalls are clear. The green season, May to October, brings afternoon rain and a greener landscape.
